The Vitamin- September 18th

Deuteronomy 6:4 NIV
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Who is God? I’ll give you the short answer. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. How do we know? Because the Bible tells us to and the Bible is God’s revelation to His people. How can be God be one if He’s Father, Son and Spirit? That I can’t tell you. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Jesus instructs us to ‘Baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19) He says ‘name’, not ‘names’.

I look at it this way. If God is really God, then He ought to be above and beyond my comprehension. If I could dissect Him, figure Him out and put Him back together then He wouldn’t be much of a God, he’d be like a frog on a pin board. Don’t expect to grasp it, believe it. God is who He says He is and He is perfectly equipped to meet our needs. Our greatest need has been met by the Father, who sent His Son to die in our place. The Holy Spirit then gives us faith to trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection. We don’t have to ‘get it’ (God’s identity) But we do ‘get it’ (His salvation)

Thanks be to God!

The Vitamin- September 10th

2 Timothy 3:15 NIV
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,”

Who says the Bible is true? The Bible does. How reliable is the Bible if the claim of reliability comes from that Bible itself? Ultimately it’s a matter of faith. Just like it’s a matter of faith, not evidence, that the world came about as a result of some big ‘bang’, just like it’s a matter of faith to deny the existence of God, it’s also a matter of faith when it comes to trusting the Bible.

However, in addition to the internal claim, there is external evidence that the Bible is credible. There are historical references to places and people that have been verified as historically accurate. There is the fact that the Bible was recorded by many different people over the course of about 1500 years. Many different people from many different centuries all recorded a message that agrees and points to Jesus as our Savior from sin.

The Koran has one author, Mohammed. One man claimed exclusive revelations and expects the world to trust his ‘revelations’ alone. The Book of Mormon has one author, Joseph Smith, who expected the world to trust his ‘revelations’ alone as a source of truth. The Bible was recorded by many different authors, almost eliminating the possibility of collusion and forwarding one’s own cause.

Finally, the Bible doesn’t point to human ability or activity as a source of salvation. All other belief systems on earth center on our ability to perform to a certain standard in order to please God. The Bible points us to Jesus, who pleased God for us.

Anyhoo, more on Sunday.

The Vitamin- September 4th

2 Timothy 3:14 NIV
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,”

This Sunday is Rally Day! Yes, it’s that time of year already. Kids are back in school, prepping their minds for a life of productive citizenship. Rally Day serves as a reminder to include the word ‘Christian’ in that phrase. My goal is that you and your children live your lives as productive Christian citizens.

We will all have an opportunity to deepen our faith and our understanding of God’s Word starting this Sunday with the first installment of our new sermon series, “The Christian Faith”. It’s a seven part series intended to briefly review the basics of what Christians believe. Those of us who call ourselves Christian need to know what we’re into. God desires us to be familiar with what He has revealed in the Bible. This series will help to do that.

We’ll also be starting a new 12 session Bible study this Sunday that will re-introduce you to your Father in heaven. I say ‘re-introduce’ because I hope this study will enable you to see God in a different light. God has invited us to call Him Father. He is a loving, caring, merciful Father who wants us to enjoy a deep, intimate relationship with Him. Stick around for Bible study this Sunday at 9:30 and get to know your heavenly Father on a deeper level.

Sunday School will also begin this Sunday. There will be no formal classes but there will be special activities to introduce teachers to students and students to teachers.

I know this has been less a devotion and more a commercial. Thanks for reading!

Let’s rally to the cause of Christ!
